Interview, All Because Of The Big SN (social networking)

Okay, I officially have a job interview. All due to social networking... literally ALL due to social networking. It all started with my friend twitter, if you aren't on it get on it, it really is amazing. So my co-intern friend and I started twittering mostly to each other, making comments on blogs, social networking, PR etc., from there I started to "follow" people. I searched PR, PR Jobs, Phoenix PR, Denver PR, LA PR. Basically I was looking for anyone in the PR industry. From there I broadened my search to Communications, Marketing and Advertising just trying to meet anyone in the "communications field." So that is how it all started. I currently follow about 80 people and have about 40 following me, not bad for someone who started tweeting less than a month ago!

So from these tweets I started meeting people, normally I would like what they posted and respond with some sort of input, suggestions or thought. This is how I got connected to @LisaNAU, I saw that she did PR and that she lived in Flagstaff (my old stomping grounds) and I wondered how she managed to make a living doing PR and living in a town such as Flag (small, no communications industry etc.). So I asked her... "@lisanau, how do you manage to do PR in Flag? I had to leave bc of lack of the industry" she responded "@smartin00 I work for NAU, doing their Public Relations" ahh that makes sense. The one industry that Flag does have, besides the hospital (read doctor, nurse) and GORE (read engineer, math person, rocket scientist) is Northern Arizona University. So as we chatted (on Twitter) I mentioned that if she had any comments, suggestions or concerns about getting into the PR industry I would really appreciate her input. What is better than a comment, suggestion or concern is that she asked me for my resume and sent it on to her friend at an awesome PR agency in Phoenix!

I get an email a little while later, from a guy who got my resume from a guy that was apparently LisaNAU's friend! You rock Lisa, BTW! The I turn to a different form of social media, a Webinar... a seminar that takes place online. This specific webinar was put on by the same agency that Lisa forwarded my resume to. So I take place in this hour long webinar, it was on social media, definitely relative, and then after I start "following" (using Twitter) the two gentlemen that put the webinar on. I then tweet, "OMA just hosted the best social media webinar, it was interesting and informative! Thanks OMA" to that I get a reply from about 4 people (including the 2 gentlemen that hosted the webinar) about how they were glad I enjoyed and I should tune in for future webinars etc.. Then once they have directly comment to me, I mention my interview with their company and now when I go in there next Friday I not only have a contact, I have multiple contacts and I actually know a little about these people!

So there you go... in a nutshell that is how social networking alone got me a job interview. I love you Twitter :)

Interesting. I actually got my job at OMA the same way - kind of. Was through Twitter but not as a result of a webinar ;)
